Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC) - Code Adoption Update
The State of Maine has amended the MUBEC adoption. On Tuesday January 7, 2025, the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety signed the amendments into rule. The Town of Hiram must adopt the newly adopted 2021 I-codes as directed by the State on April 7, 2025.
The Code Enforcement Officer is here to answer any questions regarding the adoption of the 2021 I-codes.
All electrical & plumbing work must be done by a licensed
electrician or plumber, except as provided by these codes.
The Town of Hiram has adopted the following:
Maine Uniform Building and Energy Codes
MUBEC applies to all towns within the State of Maine. Enforcement of MUBEC is based on population or local action for communities under 4,000 residents as outlined in Chapter 1 of "MUBEC Rules and Laws."

The following standards are also adopted as part of MUBEC and are mandatory
American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM)
The MUBEC is adopted by the State of Maine and applies to all buildings constructed or renovated in Maine regardless of municipal population. The MUBEC shall be adopted and enforced in municipalities with a population of 4,000 residents or more. Municipalities with populations under 4,000 may choose to adopt and enforce the MUBEC.
