I sold my house why am I getting a tax bill? Why isn't the bill in my name?

In the State of Maine the assessed owner of record is who owns the property as of April 1st.  So if you sell your house after April 1st,  when the tax bills are sent out that years tax bill will  be in your name.  We do however try to mail a copy of the tax bill to the new owner as well. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the tax collector at 625-4663. The current years taxes should have been handled at the closing.    If your closing was held prior to the date of commitment there will be probably be a  balance due, that is usually up to the new owner or mortgage company  to pay, but it is in everyone best interest to make sure the taxes are paid in full prior to September 1st.
