General Assistance

The Town of Hiram offers a General Assistance program for people in need. This program provides confidential financial assistance  for residents who are having difficulty meeting basic needs for housing, utilities, food, fuel oil etc. as defined by local ordinance and state statute, MRSA 22 part 5 Chapter 1161. 

The program is funded by local property taxes with 70% reimbursement from the State. 


Application Process 

Applications are taken by appointment only.  Please contact Terry Day at the Town Office to schedule your appointment.  Your assistance will be based on the 30 day period  following your application. The Town will also look back to the 30 days before you applied to see what money you received and how you spent it. The Town will need to see the following: Drivers license or other ID, Social Security cards for all those in the household, Lease or mortgage agreement, most recent CMP bills and or other proof of expenses (ex.  rent/mortgage, heating/fuel, electricity, food medical expenses etc.) Cancelled checks, receipts or other documents that show how you have spent your money and income in the last 30 days. Proof of all household income and assets including - cash on hand, income tax refunds, unemployment benefits, child support benefits, TANF benefits, social security & SSI & SSDI benefits, checking and savings accounts, veterans pensions, workers compensation, retirement pensions, rental income, retirement accounts, assistance from relatives, in kind income and self-employment income. Copies of any car registrations, recreational vehicles, real estate holdings etc.

 1/4 mile south of Rte 160. 

Days and Hours - 3rd Thursday of every month, 1 pm to 5:50 pm. Emergency Food Boxes as needed, oftern available the same day requested.

Heating Assistance / Community Concepts

The State of Maine offers a Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, commonly called LIHEAP or HEAP. This program provides money to low income homeowners and renters to help pay heating costs. The funds are distributed through Community Concepts for Hiram. The program is not intended to pay for all heating cost, but to assist in paying the heating bill. Please contact Community Concepts directly at 1-800-866-5588 or visit their website.  Community Concepts offers several other programs in addition to fuel assistance be sure to look at the programs they have to offer. 

Meals on Wheels / Seniors Plus

The program provides up to five meals each week. Volunteers and staff deliver five meals on Tuesdays  arriving between 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Meals are delivered frozen. This program is more than just a well  balanced meal; it also a wellness check and a friendly visit. Volunteers and staff are trained to make sure clients are safe when they make their delivery. 

You may qualify for Meals on Wheels if you are 60 or older, primarily home-bound, unable to regularly prepare nutritious meals, able to accept meals during our deliver time frame and agree to an in-home nutritional assessment.  There is no income eligibility for Meals on Wheels.  Please call 1-800-427-1241 for more information or visit their website

211 - Looking for Assistance

Need some help but have no idea who to call? Start by calling 211 or if you prefer visit 211's website.  It is a free, confidential, referral service . They can help connect anyone regardless of age or income to local services. They are staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week whether you need help with financial assistance, domestic violence, addiction, health care, heating or utilities, they can find out what you need and help find a local agencies that can assist you. 

With hundreds of services available out there it can be overwhelming to try and find the right number for the agency you need due to our location. Call 211 and let them assist you.
